THE ROSS TREHARNE SHIELD 2008 - BRIAN GATFIELD

On hand at the 2009 AGM and Awards night was Brian Gatfield, the recipient of the 2008 Ross Treharne Shield. Unfortunately Brian was unable to attend the 2008 symposium to receive his award and the Board felt it was appropriate to present the shield to Brian in person (prior to removing it from his grasp to present it to the 2009 recipient). We did, however, present Brian with his perpetual trophy. Thanks Brian.

THE AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY CERTIFICATE

FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE FIELD OF EW - MR. JOHN DAVIES

CITATION: This award recognises your achievements over many years in the field of Electronic Warfare. Specifically it acknowledges your passion and innovation for EW which has led to the success of such programs as the Generic Threat Simulator (GTS), the PA10 pods used to evaluate advanced EW equipment and more recently the ALR-2002 pod. This capability has been showcased at many local and international trials such as RIMPAC and admired by such organisations as NRL in the US. This capability will be maintained through an ASP SPO initiative to establish an EW T&E facility at the Regional Support Centre, RAAF Edinburgh, which John sometimes refers to as the “Pod Shop”….but is really more.

This award also recognises your more recent contributions in protecting our soldiers as part of project Solvo Narro.

As the Airborne Systems and Threat Emulation Manager, EW for BAE Systems, your enthusiasm and dedication for “flying EW” is well known to all around you and an inspiration to all of us.

THE AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY CERTIFICATE

FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE FIELD OF EW - AUSDIRCM TEAM

CITATION: This award recognises the AUSDIRCM Team from BAE Systems EW. With support from the Commonwealth, this team has produced a world class DIRCM demonstrator which has helped put our DIRCM EW technology on the world map.

Patrick Klovekorn and his team, using leading DSTO research, produced a DIRCM laser referred to as AT-MURLIN. With tenacity and professional skills and talent, the team were able to overcome the many challenges to deliver an outstanding laser for Australian EW and hopefully for others.

Similarly John Cole and his team produced a novel DIRCM turret and integrated AT MURLIN, the AAR-60 warner and “John Davies” special pod to produce a DIRCM demonstrator. Flying on a Learjet over the Murray Bridge army range with ground based targets, the system achieved over a 95% success rate. What they achieved with the level of funding and available of time has been the envy of many other organisations around the world.

Together they are the AUSDIRCM team for BAE Systems.

This achievement is a credit to the Team and its collaborative efforts with the DSTO and the rest of the Commonwealth.
